On Friday, February 6, UC Merced Student Itzayana Hermosillo-Cortez passed away at a hospital in her hometown of Ontario, California. She lost a battle with a brain tumor. Vice chancellor Charles Nies stated, in an email, “Itzayana was a sophomore political science major…in the short time she was on campus, she was actively involved in the Fiat Lux Scholars community and a member of the Residence Hall Association. Her friends all commented on how eager she was to be a UC Merced Bobcat and her warm smile and commitment to education had a positive impact on all.” A memorial was held for her on Tuesday, February 10, at the oak tree by Kolligan Library.
